Course Representative & Student Ambassador

Helping the Games Course leader to recruit at a UCLAN Open Day

During my 2nd and 3rd years at university, I had the pleasure of being able to sign up to be the course representative for Games Design and later, a student ambassador for the university. These felt like important building blocks for me as they allowed me to flex my communication muscles to make sure that both everyone had been heard and that we could find some solutions to issues.

  • As course rep I was able to get the course studio to stay open with 24 hour access for students during the 2020 Global Game Jam. This is something that was taken away with COVID but i’ve since been told that it’s carried over for future generations.

While i’ve not been able to to reap the reward of the work I put in, it looks like its stuck around for those who come next.

A trickier issue for me was being approached about the lack of hygeine of a couple of the other students. Not being sure how to handle this I consulted with the course leader and opted to have a sit down in private with the problem people individually. I see this as a success because while I can’t say for sure if there are any hurt feelings there, despite the conversations seeming amicable, the hygiene standards did improve.

  • As student ambassador I was mostly required to have bi-monthly meetings with the lead course rep to discuss if I thought the course was headed in the right direction. To which I usually didn’t have much to report.

I was also there to attend recruitment drives for my course, bringing some of my work along so that attendees to open days and classroom tours were able to see what was being produced.
