Global Game Jam 2020 - Site Coordinator

During my 3rd university year the Global Game Jam was once again fast approaching and the people that had hosted it prior had already left. I was able to get in contact with one of the previous people that ran the event and asked them what the pipeline would be in order for me to host an event instead.

After a bit of deliberation I decided to go for it with one of my buddies who was studying his masters degree. In order to make this happen I had to coordinate with the lead tutor for the course and let them know that I was interested in running the event. Thankfully due to the courses strong belief in game jams being the key to success in the games industry I got the green light.

This ended up with several rounds of interviews from the UK’s jam site leader, who’s name escapes me. We talked over discord with our webcams so she could verify we were real and get a tour of the location, when we got the green light we had to register ourselves on the GGJ website and keep ourselves open for anyone willing to participate. Which included people not currently enrolled at the university.

A livestream was set up in the studio for twitch so that people visiting the GGJ website could see the different groups working on projects across the world, with some streams being featured on their own website on a rotating basis.

By the end of the game jam I felt a little disappointed that I myself hadn’t participated in the jam but it was a fun experience to just be the host and make announcements in front of a crowd of people. The games that were created were of excellent quality and its come to my understanding that since I left the course nobody else has stepped up to run the event, which is very saddening to hear.
